As I mentioned earlier; don’t always assume that the best candidates are going to the largest agencies. In reading several blogs coming from the candidate side; many candidates are quite frustrated with large agency services with complaints ranging from unfulfilled promises to unreturned phone calls, to never even getting an opportunity to step foot in the door. Some candidates simply did not make the “cut,” for whatever reason.This leaves many candidates to fall between the cracks, which mean missed opportunities in your company finding the right talent to fit your business needs. So where do those missed candidates arrive? At the doorsteps of smaller, boutique agencies who take the time to sift through each and every resume they get. Smaller agencies will preserve resources and give a personal touch to their methods, communication and soft skills assessments to their candidates. Smaller boutique firms may have a unique pool of candidates and take the time find out more about each candidate they work with.I recently placed someone who applied for a position of mine. She was not a fit for that position, but I saved her resume. When another position came up, she was a perfect match for this job opening. From talking to her, she had given up on larger agencies and felt she had fallen by the wayside. This was a shame because she was a perfect match for the client I placed her with. With an extensive phone screen, where the candidate lived and some of her personal preferences; she is now at her dream job and the client is very pleased. Ok, so how did I make that placement with so much ease? I just got lucky, right? Wrong. Experience pays off. I received a job order from the very same company and the next placement went just as smooth as the first. This only happened because I knew the ropes and knew what to expect. I learned about the company, studied the job description, and asked what top 3 soft skills and technical skills were needed for the position. This gained my contact’s trust and gave me the expert edge. So anyone can follow those steps, right? Well, it all depends on the type of job that you are trying to fill. Some positions are more complicated to fill than others, so working with an experienced recruiter will reduce the stress for you and the recruiter on the other end. For example, it’s kind of like making a new dish with very specific ingredients and preparation steps. You can get beginner’s luck, sure, but it’s a stretch. You probably already had years of cooking experience that gives you a clear idea of what to expect from previous or similar experiences cooking other dishes. An experienced cook not only knows how the ingredients fit together, but how those ingredients work together in flavoring the dish. A little too much of this and too little of that can be disastrous to the meal. An experienced cook will take more ease in tackling the basic issues, so when the complications settle in, they can spend more time with those new challenges that “make” or “break” the success of the dish.
